The APOD 2023 Walk for a Veteran with PTSD brought together the defence, veteran, and first responder communities for a powerful day of support, awareness, and connection along the Adelaide coastline.

Held on Saturday, 29 July, the event once again demonstrated the strength of community, with a large turnout of participants walking in support of the health and wellbeing of veterans, first responders, and their families.

More than $20,000 was raised through this year’s event, with funds donated to valued charity partners, the Partners of Veterans Association of Australia Inc. and SA Police Legacy. The APOD team alone contributed over $4,500, with APOD member and veteran Andy Irvine leading fundraising efforts with more than $1,300 in donations.

Participants took on distances ranging from 14km to 42km, walking alongside soldiers from Charlie Company 7RAR, veterans, families, and supporters. The shared experience created a strong sense of camaraderie and purpose throughout the day.

The event began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country delivered by Isaac Hannam, a proud Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri man, at Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club. His words set a meaningful tone for the day, recognising culture, community, and connection.

APOD CEO Paul Broadbridge, who completed the 42km walk, spoke about the importance of the event and APOD’s ongoing commitment to the community.

“It’s an absolute honour for APOD to be the naming sponsor of the event, and it’s amazing to see such an awesome turnout today,” he said.

“At APOD, our commitment to the veteran and first responder community runs deep. We understand the unique challenges they face, particularly those living with PTSD. Events like this are vital — not only do they raise funds for essential support services, but they also help build awareness around mental health.”

As the day drew to a close, participants gathered back at Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club for an evening of connection and reflection. Live entertainment, speeches, and a shared meal created a fitting end to a day centred on support and community spirit.

The Walk for a Veteran with PTSD continues to play an important role in raising awareness of the physical and mental health challenges faced by those who serve, as well as their families. Every step taken and every dollar raised contributes to a greater understanding and stronger support network for our nation’s heroes.

APOD extends sincere thanks to everyone who participated, donated, and supported the event. Your contribution helps make a lasting difference — and ensures this important cause continues to grow each year.
